Main Materials

Solid wood is a term most commonly used to distinguish between ordinary lumber and engineered wood, but it also refers to structures that do not have hollow spaces. Engineered wood products are manufactured by binding together wood strands, fibers, or veneers with adhesives to form a composite material. Engineered wood includes plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and fiberboard. The fact that a product is made from solid wood is often touted in advertisements. However, using solid wood has advantages and disadvantages.

Shuttering plywood is a material used in the shuttering process, which occurs when pouring concrete into molds. The Shuttering plywood can be constructed in such a way that it forms a mold which is weather resistant and will not stick to the concrete itself. This material is usually not especially attractive, so it is not suitable for applications that require an aesthetically pleasing outer veneer. Plywood is a type of wooden panel that is created by laying thin veneers of wood on top of each other, then gluing those veneers together.

Plywood can be very strong if constructed properly. The veneers are usually laid in such a way that grains run perpendicularly to each other, thereby maximizing strength and reducing the likelihood of splitting. The type of glue used to create the wood will also have an impact on its strength. Shuttering plywood is very often used for outdoor applications, which means the wood must be resistant to water damage, especially warping and rotting. The glue that is used to make shuttering plywood is therefore resistant to moisture penetration to ensure strength and stability. This type of wood can generally be reused, though the panels will need to be cleaned carefully and the wood will need to be stored in a cool, dry location.

Medium density fiberboard, or MDF, is a composite wood product similar to particleboard. It’s made out of wood waste fibers glued together with resin, heat, and pressure. MDF is appropriate for many applications, from cabinetry to moulding, because it is smooth, uniform, and won’t warp.

MDF has many advantages over plank wood, particleboard, or high density fiberboard. It’s very smooth because the wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine. This makes it have low “tear out,” which means that when sawed, the end has a smooth cut instead of a jagged edge. This also means that a coat of primer and a couple of coats of paint take well, leaving an attractive, finished surface unlike other composite wood products. MDF also has a mild reaction to moisture, meaning it won’t warp or swell in high-humidity applications like a bathroom cabinet.

Builders use MDF in many capacities, such as in furniture, shelving, laminate flooring, decorative moulding, and doors. They value MDF for its insular qualities in sound and heat. Also, it can be nailed, glued, screwed, stapled, or attached with dowels, making it as versatile as plank wood. Usually, people working with MDF use a carbide saw fitted with a vacuum to reduce the amount of airborne dust. Since MDF is strengthened with resin containing formaldehyde, those at exposure try to reduce their risk of inhalation, or use special MDF with lower formaldehyde levels.

Particle board – also known as particleboard, low-density fibreboard (LDF), and chipboard – is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even sawdust, and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded.[1] Oriented strand board, also known as flakeboard, waferboard, or chipboard, is similar but uses machined wood flakes offering more strength. All of these are composite materials[2] that belong to the spectrum of fiberboard products.

Polyurethane is a resilient, flexible and durable manufactured material that can take the place of paint, cotton, rubber, metal or wood in thousands of applications across virtually all fields. It can be hard like fiberglass, squishy like upholstery foam, protective like varnish, bouncy like rubber or sticky like glue. Since its invention during the 1940s, polyurethane has been used in a wide range of items, from baby toys to airplane wings, and it continues to be adapted for contemporary technology.
